Akua Aina is the name of our sustainable farm on the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. We have been developing this since 2005 as a place of learning how to live totally off grid as we are reliant 100% on solar energy and water from the sky. Over this time we have gradually planted 65 - 70 trees of a wide variety of specialty fruits, nuts, spices & ornamentals. Prior to this the previous owner had allowed a local cattle rancher to keep their cattle on the land which helped to established excellent and fertile soil over many years. The climate at this 1800 ft elevation offers a unique balance of sunshine and rain to support the solar power and sufficient water for 6 solar systems & 9 catchment tanks. It has begun to be a successful experiment in farming which is now producing an interesting variety of food which now supports the 3 - 5 residents as well as others in Honoka’a and Waimea. We are raising chickens for egg production, sheep to help maintain pastures, while providing manure for fertilizing trees and vegetables. We have recently added Pekin Ducks to our animal ohana so that we can use the “duck soup” to further support healthy plants as well as help with managing of insects and frogs. We have learned the value of the “duck soup”, worm tea, and comfrey tea mixed with spirilina to enhance the minerals of the earth. We have appreciate that there must be a balance in having a select variety of animals and plants to help support a sustainable eco-farm. We are always learning while growing here at Akua Aina!

Most of the plants were chosen as super foods, some with nitrogen fixing benefits and various permaculture uses. There is always more to learn!

Enjoy scrolling through the photo’s below for a pictorial walk about on Akua Aina! Perhaps one day you will come to visit us! We are open to hosting people who have a serious interest in permaculture and organic food production as 5 acres in Hawaii is a LOT to manage. We have 3 people living on this farm most of the time.

Hana Hou … This is a tiny home where we occasionally have available for worker / guests in an off-grid tiny home. This too is powered by solar and fed by catchment water and it has it’s own composting toilet.
